Women Share Their Secrets To Surviving Postpartum Depression Childbirth can trigger a gamut of emotions from elation to fear to anxiety after all, it affects a womans hormones immensely. Many mothers experience mood swings, crying bouts, anxiety and difficulty sleeping after giving birth. These typically come onwithin the first two to three days post-delivery, and they may last for up to two weeks.But, for upwards of 20 percent of women, according to the Center for Disease Control, these emotions devolve into flaute. And postpartum depression (PPD) doesnt just take adjusting it can last long after a mothers maternity leave has been used and certainly well past that. In fact, PPD can develop anywhere from a few weeks into motherhood to even a year after delivery, which meansmany women cope with it day in and day out, even while they work.Ispoke with five women in vastly different careers with vastly different situations, and theyve each shared their tips on staying positive,dealing with PPD at work and, for some, bouncing back. To follow is what they had to say, and perhaps a little motivation.1. Cassie Tanner, 30, Nonprofit Executive DirectorI returned to work when my son welches nine weeks old, and my PPD peaked when he turned seven months old. Some of the mental symptoms I experienced were racing thoughts, feeling like a failure, self-loathing and deep depression. Physically, I was experiencing panic attacks, loss of appetite, the inability to concentrate and I had trouble breathing these symptoms combined to make me feel like a complete failure leid just at home, but at work, too.My staff and our clients depend on me to be on the top of my game, and I felt (and still sometimes feel) like I am letting everyone down. I would start a project and have trouble feinschliff it. I became very forgetful, and I was incredibly emotional. Fortunately, I work with all women, and I felt the best policy was honesty. I shared with them, without going into details, that I was struggling and appreciated their patience and understanding. I have always tried to extend grace to my staff, and it was repaid back to me in spades.As far as coping, I make sure I keep good lists of what I need to do and set achievable daily goals so I can leave work feeling like I accomplished something. I also take time to go on short walks outside to stretch my legs and re-center myself, especially if I start feeling overwhelmed.2.Abbey Davis, 23, Registered NurseIm a single mom and I work as a registered nurse on night shifts, from 700 pm to 730 am. I went back to work after 12 weeks of maternity leave, even though the majority of my leave was unpaid because I didnt have enough paid time off accrued I also became pregnant before I had benefits, so I didnt receive any short-term disability pay.A lot of what I feel is because of my situation as a single mom and my babys dad not wanting to be a family. We tried to work on things during my pregnancy, but I had experienced som e anxiety and depression during that time and, after having my baby girl, they got pretty severe to the point at which I had multiple thoughts of either harming or killing myself. I was extremely angry with her dad and the fact that I was a single mom, and I continually felt hopeless, very irritable, and my mood swings were all over the place, but fruchtweinly I was just sad and depressed and would cry all the time, even if I didnt know what I was crying about.I had started therapy six weeks after having her, but my anxiety and depression became worse when it was almost time for me to go back to work. So a week before I went back, I was started on Lexapro. It seems to be working OK, while still going to therapy.When Im at work, it mostly depends on the night with how I feel. I work in an ICU, so sometimes nights can be pretty intense and the patients are tasky. I find myself irritable most nights and getting frustrated over simple things, though thats not how I ever want to feel whe n Im taking care of someone in their most vulnerable state. However, I have some of the best coworkers and family and friends, and theyre the reasons why Im still standing and pushing through every day to be the best mom I can be. And, I know its biased, but having the most beautiful baby girl who lights up every time I see her after working a long night is a huge coping mechanism for me. I do occasionally write in my journal and Ive started doing yoga again, which has also helped.3.Alex Griggs, 24, Steel Company Document ControllerI lost my son shortly after birth and had two other little ones relying on me. Im a single mom so, really, I had no other choice but to suck it up and be strong because I was doing it all alone. I still have PPD, zweipolig depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Its a daily struggle. Some days are easier than others, and some days it takes everything I can do to get out of bed in the morning.But do it. Get out of bed. Drink a glass of wate r even though you feel like youll throw it up, take a shower and get dressed. Eat some food and take vitamin D. Go to work and prove to yourself that youre stronger than you or anyone else thinks. Youre a woman, a mom and a damn warrior.4.Sofia Leah, 38, Speech PathologistI have two children under two and my PPD started with anxiety, overwhelmingness, tearfulness, not being able to complete simple everyday tasks, loneliness, social isolation, feelings of worthlessness and wanting to run away. My babies cries would send me into a frenzy, and I would be constantly in tears.I am currently unable to work because I am still very overwhelmed and not coping. But during the weeks I worked, what got me through the workday was trying to not overdo it. Knowing that my kids were safe with trusted people (daycare/nanny) helped tremendously. And the distraction of work does help a little bit, and getting out the house does, too. And definitely medication and therapy.5. Annalise Green, 28, CEO of Casino Review, Blogger/VloggerAs CEO of a media and marketing company, it can get quite stressful. I work from home and manage our contractors and employees remotely we currently have two contractors and three employees on the team. Luckily, several of my friends had previously suffered from PPD and werequite open about it, so I knew what to look for and be aware of. I was actually at a work event in London, away from my children, and I realized that I was absolutely hating being there. I didnt want to talk or socialize with potential new clients like I was supposed to. I was jealous of the women walking around who looked carefree, beautiful and confident. I felt horrid, ugly, out of place and unwanted. In that moment, I realized that something was seriously wrong as I used to be so confident, bubbly and always ready to mingle and socialize at the drop of a hat. I was unable to do my job properly as I absolutely must talk to people new and old in my position, and... sleep depriva tion definitely didnt help, as it had made me lose a lot of my get-up-and-go mentality.When I returned home I went straight to the doctors, and I burst into tears before I could even say anything. I explained what was going on, but how I didnt feel depressed or unhappy. The doctor said that PPD comes in all shapes and sizes, as its a hormonal and chemical imbalance you dont have to feel depressed to have it. He prescribed me a course of tablets and explained it would be a long and slow journey to recovery, but that I would get there... and I didI only ever suffered after having my fourth child. I had previously had the baby blues with two of the others, but that is now so common that its classed as normal, so getting PPD was a bit of a shock as I never expected it the fourth time around. My advice Talk about it. Always talk about it and get it out of your system. Bottling it up will only give it more power and cause it to eat away at more of you. Once its out there and people realiz e that you can still function even while suffering or recovering from it, it starts to break the stigma around mental health, and thats really, really important. Be proud of being a survivor. Every day that you wake up, refuse to give in and strive to get better at beating it. Theyre lonely. They cant get around as well. They dont understand computers or modern technology. They dont want to go anywhere.Whether or not these assumptions are supported by evidence is another story entirely.A Place for Mom, a senior care referral service, surveyed 2,000 people aged 16-34 about their opinions about the old and the aging process, then checked their opinions against research. The survey, called Better With Age? How Young People See Seniors and the Aging Progress showed that the discrepancy in opinion versus fact was surprising.When asked what age is old, respondents agreed it was age 59 female respondents chose 61, whereas those identifying as male said 56.Here are some of the statements that young people were presented with, versus realityOlder people become a n economic burden when they get old FALSE. 65% of survey respondents disagreed with this statement, and they were correct while people over 50 are only 35% of the U.S. population, they contribute 43% of total U.S. GDP $7.4 trillion annually.Seniors are out of tick with modern technology FALSE. 55% of respondents agreed with this statement, but its mostly false, as a number of studies from the Pew Research Center have shown. They might not be on Instagram, but amajority of seniors (67%) use the internet regularly and 51% have broadband at home. A Pew study found 37% of people aged 65 and overuse social media, and 70% of older people used Facebook daily.Older people become worse drivers as they age MOSTLY FALSE. While 72% of young people thought this was true, the Federal Highway Safety Administration shows that drivers 65 and over comprise of 19% of crash victims in fact, its younger drivers aged 16-34 who make up a higher percentage, at 38%.Old people are lonely TRUE. Young peopl e agreed with this statement, and theres truth to it. People spend 6 hours a day alone by age 60, and that increases to 8 hours by age 80, according to the American Time Use Survey.People dont like their bodies when they get old. FALSE. While young people thought this statement would be true, a Gallup poll of 85,145 Americans found that body acceptance hits a high in our 70s and 80s.For all their negative associations with aging, young people were excited about a number of aspects of old age having mora time to spend with their loved ones and grandchildren, having more time to travel, having time to pursue a hobby, and so on. Maybe it really is better after 60.

It seems that every robot to emerge from a robotics lab is inspired by the locomotive method of one of the worlds clever beasts, be it bee, galago, cheetah, or octopus. But each of these machines has its limitations. If they are large they are stymied by smaller crevices. If they are small, they are limited by the power they can carry.To overcome the difficulties faced by the fauna-inspired robots of the world, researchers in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have turned to other life forms plants and fungus. Rather than traverse ground and space as a single unit, their robot grows from place to place.I remember watching, over many months, an ivy plant on my bookshelf grow around the corner, seeking the sunlight, says Elliot Hawkes, the projects lead researcher and a profe ssor of mechanical engineering at the university. I thought that, in a certain, very slow way, it was going somewhere. At the same time, I was working on pneumatic artificial muscles in lab, and I was able to modify the standard stretching behavior to get tip-based extension. I realized we were on to something when I attempted to grow an early prototype through the complete mess that is my desk, and against all odds, it easily passed through the clutter.The new censory devices could give robots the ability to feel their environment. leumund University of MinnesotaHawkes ultimate creation looks something like an absurdly long version of one of those slippery, slightly disturbing, water snake toys. We found these after the fact, but the eversion at the tip is very similar. Unlike the toy, it is not a loop though, so we are actually able to change length and grow, he says. Hawkes tube extends at the closed end and is filled with air at the open end. As the tube elongates, new material appears at the tip from the inside of the tube, while the outer walls stay put. By altering the pressure, either side of the tip can be lengthened, allowing it to turn. A small camera that stays with the tip allows the navigators to tell it where to go.Made of polyethylene, the winding anguine bot can squeeze into the tightest of corners and can take all kinds of abuse. It can grow through nails because the body does not move with respect to the environment, says Hawkes. This means that if a nail pokes it, the hole is sealed by the nail. This is in contrast to a body that locomotes, which would be gashed by the nail. It can also squeeze between a sandwich of flypaper, expand through a trough of glue, and travel through a slit less than a sixth of its inflated size. To make their grow-bot even more indestructible, Hawkes and his team are experimenting with other materials such as Kevlar and rip-stop nylon.These feats make it the ideal rescue tool. Hawkes lab has already demonstrated how the robot can be used to sneak under a door and into a room, where it can bend like a hook to shut off a valve. Its also wormed its way into a closed room and successfully put out a fire there. A smaller version may someday guide catheters during surgery.In theory, the soft robot can grow indefinitely as one roll of tubing comes to an end it could be attached to a fresh roll. But, at the moment, the robot stops growing around 100 yards, regardless of how much tubing is available. The friction of pulling the new material through starts to get hard to overcome, says Hawkes. We are looking at new, lower friction options that can hold higher pressures, so we might be able to go quite a bit farther in the near future.With a stronger, longer, growing robot, there may be no emergency that cant be reached. Hopefully, the rescued wont be terrified by the appearance of a cycloptic, ever-extending, polymer digit.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. It seems that most Americans seem to agree with the sentiment behind this decisioneven though not all of them are willing to make the leap. Sixty-seven percent of US workers said that loving the work you do is essential. The group of Americansthat were willing to take a pay cutfor their dream job said they would give up as much as 29% of their current salary.An animateddisplayof passion can sometimes yield monetary benefits, however. According to Ryan Lynch, client executiveover at K-Force, enthusiasm is just as valuable to some recruiters as it is to job seekers. Lynch writes, Employers are willing to make sacrifices for someo ne whos passionate about their work. Some clients will pay more for a standout candidateor hire someone without having a defined job opening.The averageUS worker is confident that theirdream job is only five years away. Sixty-two percent believe their dream job is achievable within the firm theyre presently working at.The roadblocksSo what keeps so many Americans from awarding their current job with an A? Well according to the crop of professionals examined by Onepoll, several key things stand out, poor communication/feedback and employee retention being chief among them.
